Updates from Foxbard Farm 2022
Dear Customers,
We are writing to share an important change in our operations with you.
Since 1943 the Payne family has been proud owners and stewards of the land known as Foxbard Farm, engaged in a variety of businesses including growing dairy and beef cattle, hay, apples, vegetables, and wood for cordwood, custom sawing and cordwood shavings. A constant has been an emphasis on sustainable forest management practices and land protection to preserve the rural landscape of Shelburne.
When John Payne moved full-time to the farm in 1991, he initiated an ambitious effort to grow the cattle herd into a business to produce high-quality, all natural, grass-fed Black Angus beef that could be sold at affordable prices to local families and businesses. For many years he worked tirelessly and enthusiastically at the beef business and all it required, in addition to splitting wood, mending fences and chasing down escaped cows.
When John passed away in November 2018 the family and Kurt and Lynn Benson lovingly maintained the operations of the farm and beef business as we assessed our ability to carry on without him. Now, after three years, we have made the decision to shift the work of the Farm to land conservation, protection and sustainable forestry, and to close the beef business.
Although it was a tough and sad decision, it is the right one for us as we strive to maintain the property in its current state. We appreciate this may be disappointing news for you. Please know that we couldn’t have done it without you, and that one of the greatest joys of John’s retirement was the people he got to know and work with while growing and selling Foxbard beef.
Any outstanding orders will be fulfilled, but there will be no Foxbard beef available for sale in 2022/2023. If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
Warm regards,
The Payne Family
